- 2,5-Dimethyl-1H-pyrrole-1-ethanol
2-(2,5-Dimethyl-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)ethanol (2DMPE) is a short chain fatty acid found in the plasma of healthy individuals. 2DMPE has been shown to be synthesized by an oxidation reaction involving hexane and plasma proteins. This process is catalysed by the addition of additives and detergents, which activate the microcapsules. The reaction mechanism involves a series of steps that lead to the formation of 2DMPE. These include a hydrogen abstraction from hexane by an oxygen atom in the protein followed by hydrogen transfer to form a methyl radical. The methyl radical reacts with another oxygen atom in the protein to form a second methyl radical and then reacts with butyric acid to produce 2DMPE. The initial product, butyric acid, can be oxidized further to produce other oxidation products including 3-hydroxybutyric acid, 3-hydroxypentanoic acid
