Obovatol is a natural compound that is being studied as a potential biomarker for neurodegenerative diseases. It has been shown to bind to the α1 subunit of the mitochondrial ATP synthase, which is involved in cellular energy production. Obovatol also inhibits the activity of other enzymes, such as Ca2+-ATPases and phosphofructokinase. In addition, it has neurotrophic properties and can stimulate locomotor activity in animals. Furthermore, this compound can modulate signal pathways and inhibit metabolic disorders by binding to DNA polymerase γ. The most relevant mechanism of action of obovatol is its ability to increase mitochondrial membrane potential and decrease intracellular reactive oxygen species production.
