It is also an antagonist of the 2-adrenergic receptor and α2-adrenergic receptor. p-Iodoclonidine hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit phosphatase activity and cellular membrane hyperpolarization in vitro, leading to respiratory control in vivo. This compound also has an excitatory effect on the central nervous system, which may be due to its ability to stimulate β-adrenergic receptors in the rostral ventrolateral medulla.
