Product Information

Name:
Methyl 2-(bromomethyl)-4-nitrobenzoate
Synonyms:
  • Methyl 2-(Bromomethyl)-4-Nitrobenzoate
  • 2-Bromomethyl-4-Nitro-Benzoic Acid Methyl Ester
Description:

Methyl 2-(bromomethyl)-4-nitrobenzoate is a nitro compound that is used as the starting material for the synthesis of polyglutamate. It has been shown to be an analog of glutamine, which may have chemotherapeutic effects by blocking tumor cells from proliferating. Methyl 2-(bromomethyl)-4-nitrobenzoate is catalytically reduced to yield methylene dinitrobenzene, which reacts with ammonia and formaldehyde in the presence of a reductive coupling catalyst to give polyglutamate. The amide group can be converted into an ester or an amine by acidolysis or reductive amination.
