Secoisolariciresinol is a type of lignan that can be found in plants. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside and its derivative, secoisolariciresinol hydrochloride, are used for the treatment of bowel diseases such as constipation. Secoisolariciresinol has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects by increasing the amount of insulin released from the pancreas. These compounds also have antioxidant properties.
Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside is an extract from flaxseed that has been shown to have a response element on its promoter region that is similar to the response element on the promoter region of genes which are involved in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Secoisolariciresinol hydrochloride binds to DNA and inhibits IBD-related gene expression by decreasing transcriptional activity at these promoters.
