Description:(-)-9-Hydroxyrisperidone is a metabolite of risperidone that is structurally related to the neurotransmitter dopamine. This compound has been found to be a potent antagonist of serotonin and adrenergic receptors, which may contribute to its therapeutic effects in schizophrenia. (-)-9-Hydroxyrisperidone also has been shown to have a high affinity for human liver plasma proteins, which suggests it may be responsible for the long half-life seen with risperidone. The (+) form of the drug has been shown to be more potent than (-)-9-hydroxyrisperidone, while (-)-9-hydroxyrisperidone is more selective in terms of receptor binding.
