Abaperidone is a drug that is used to treat the symptoms of bowel disease, such as inflammation and ulceration. It inhibits the action of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) at neuronal 5-HT2 receptors in the brain and gastrointestinal tract. Abaperidone also inhibits the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA receptors in the brain and gastrointestinal tract, which may be useful for treating bowel disease. Abaperidone has been shown to have no significant effect on serum prolactin levels in humans.
