N-[3-(1H-Imidazol-5-ylmethyl)phenyl]ethanesulfonamide also binds to the receptor CXCR4 and inhibits cell proliferation, which may be due to its inhibition of protein synthesis. This active form is an agonist of the vasopressin V2 receptor and has been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNFα.
