Trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride is a sodium salt that belongs to the class of ionic liquids. It has been shown to be a solid catalyst for hydrogenation reactions and is used in sample preparation for FT-IR spectroscopy. Trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride's thermal expansion coefficient is about twice as large as that of water, which makes it an ideal solvent for thermally sensitive compounds such as fatty acids. Furthermore, its chemical stability allows it to be used as an extractant in the isolation of organic compounds from hydrochloric acid solutions.
