N-(1-Acetylpiperidin-4-yl)-4-fluorobenzamide is an analog of a neurotransmitter, 4-aminopyridine (4AP), which has been shown to be neuroprotective in a number of animal models. N-(1-Acetylpiperidin-4-yl)-4-fluorobenzamide is a fluorescent molecule that can be used to visualize nerve cells and their processes in the living brain. This compound has been shown to stimulate neurite outgrowth in cultured rodent neurons and also to promote nerve cell regeneration. This drug may have therapeutic use for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.
