Pepstatin A is a natural product that inhibits the activity of proteases, particularly chymotrypsin and trypsin. It binds to the active site of these enzymes, blocking access to their substrate. Pepstatin A has been shown to have synergistic effects with other drugs in vitro, such as dapsone and clindamycin. Pepstatin A has inhibitory properties against infectious diseases, including HIV-1 and HIV-2, influenza virus type A (H1N1), herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), human papilloma virus type 18 (HPV-18), hepatitis C virus (HCV) types 1a and 1b, as well as dengue fever virus. Pepstatin A is also effective in inhibiting polymerase chain reaction amplification of mitochondrial DNA from patients with mitochondrial disorders.
