Itol A is a diterpene that has been shown to have antioxidant, insecticidal and antifeedant activities. Itol A contains a unique bicyclic system with two fused rings that is rare in natural products. The structure of Itol A may be used as a starting point for the synthesis of other compounds with similar properties. This compound has been shown to have lepidoptera-specific activity against cotton bollworm and tobacco budworm larvae. Itol A also has some activity against the ryanodine receptor, which is involved in calcium release from intracellular stores.
