Glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of glutamate and pyruvate to α-ketoglutarate and L-glutamine. It is a marker for chronic viral hepatitis. GPT levels are elevated in leukemic mice, which may be due to their high level of glutamate release into the blood stream. In skin models with human HBV DNA, GPT levels were found to be significantly higher in patients with active hepatitis than in those without the disease. Elevated GPT activity has been associated with fibrinogen levels and acetate extract from the liver. It is also shown to have hepatoprotective properties by increasing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) activity in cells. The enzyme is also involved in body mass index regulation and monoclonal antibodies production.
