Lysozyme type VI is a bactericidal enzyme that is used as a reagent in molecular biology. It hydrolyzes the glycosidic bonds of peptidoglycan, which are found in the cell walls of bacteria. This protein has been shown to have an amino acid sequence that is similar to lysozymes from other species such as Escherichia coli and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Lysozyme type VI also has nitrate reductase activity, which can be measured fluorimetrically by measuring the reduction of nitrate ions to nitrite ions. The growth rate of this protein can be determined by measuring the change in absorbance at 450 nm.
