Description

Acid phosphatase is a signal peptide with a coordination geometry of tetrahedral. It is a type of enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphate monoester bonds in organic molecules and biological polymers. Acid phosphatase has been shown to have disease-modifying activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, as well as in other diseases such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and osteoarthritis. The enzyme form of acid phosphatase is active at neutral pH but becomes inactive at higher pH levels. At lower pH levels, it converts to an enzyme form that has a low affinity for extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Acid phosphatase also has been shown to be important for plant metabolism by converting nitrate reductase into an oxidizing agent.
