Urate oxidase (from Yeast) is a protein with potent anticancer properties. It induces apoptosis in human cancer cells by inhibiting kinases that are essential for cell survival and proliferation. Urate oxidase has been shown to be effective against thyroid cancer and may have potential as a therapeutic agent for other types of cancer. This protein is also an inhibitor of uric acid, which can accumulate in the urine and cause kidney stones. Urate oxidase analogs have been developed as potential drugs for the treatment of gout, a condition caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. The Chinese hamster ovary cells have been used to produce this protein, which has shown promising results in preclinical studies as a tumor growth inhibitor.
