Thyroglobulin is a glycoprotein that is synthesized in the thyroid gland and is released into the bloodstream. The molecule has two polypeptide chains, one of which contains copper ions. Thyroglobulin binds to iodine and produces a light signal when illuminated with an ultraviolet light source. Thyroglobulin can also be used as a marker for the diagnosis of thyroid cancer and other disorders such as bowel disease or cell nuclei. Thyroglobulin is an inhibitor of squamous carcinoma cells in culture and can inhibit the growth of colorectal cancer cells in mice by interfering with vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) signaling pathways. Thyroglobulin also inhibits proliferation of colon cancer cells through suppression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathways.
