Phosphorylase B is a catalytic subunit of the glycogen phosphorylase enzyme that plays an important role in glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. The catalytic activity of phosphorylase B is dependent on hydrogen bonds with the substrate and an active site lectin. This protein has a high catalytic rate, which is dependent on the presence of glucosyl residues, as well as sequences that are found in other proteins involved in glycolysis. Phosphorylase B can be used to measure glycogen levels in human serum samples by using a synthetic antibody to the enzyme.
