Cholesterol oxidase is a peroxidase-like enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of cholesterol to produce 7-ketocholesterol, an important intermediate in the synthesis of bile acids. The enzyme has potent cytotoxicity against certain cancer cells. It has been shown to be clinically useful in the diagnosis of hypercholesterolemia. Cholesterol oxidase also has an inhibitory effect on certain bacteria, such as Streptococcus spp., and Staphylococcus aureus.
