Sphingomyelinase from Bacillus cereus is a particle that binds to acyl chains. Histological analysis and monoclonal antibodies revealed that this enzyme has a catalytic mechanism with phosphodiesterase activity. The sphingomyelinase from B. cereus was shown to have an inflammatory infiltrate in the tissues of mice and rats, as well as in human atherosclerotic lesions. It is also found in pharmaceutical preparations for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. This enzyme showed a high level of activity against furyl-containing substrates, but it was not active against hl-60 cells.
