It is also elevated in the blood of patients with other types of cancer, such as carcinoma. N-(2-Hydroxystearoyl) sphingosine has been identified as a biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma and can be used for profiling and detecting early-stage cancers. The metabolomics analysis has shown that it is correlated to the expression level of organs and tissues, including lung, colon, prostate, breast, and liver.
