Bupropion is an antidepressant drug that is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). It belongs to the class of tricyclic antidepressants and its mechanism of action is not completely understood. Bupropion has been shown to lower the risk of relapse in people with MDD. The drug also has stimulant properties, increasing locomotor activity and reducing nicotine consumption in rats. Bupropion hydrochloride has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in vitro, but it does not inhibit PCR in vivo. This may be due to its ability to form a ternary complex with DNA-dependent RNA polymerase and template DNA, which can be used as a fluorescent probe for synchronous fluorescence detection.
