It is used as an antiviral drug for the treatment of herpes zoster and varicella infections. 2-[(2-Amino-6-oxo-3H-purin-9-yl)methoxy]ethyl (2S)-2-aminopropanoate inhibits viral replication by interfering with DNA synthesis.
