Cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) is a stable, water-soluble, supramolecular compound that can form complexes with a number of different molecules. It is also a model system for studying the chemical stability and transfer reactions of supramolecular compounds. CB[8] has been shown to bind to cyclic peptides and basic fibroblasts, exhibiting significant cytotoxicity. The binding of CB[8] to the peptide was found to be due to hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, which led to low bioavailability in vivo. This complex has also been used as a fluorescent probe for titration calorimetry and fluorescence spectroscopy studies.
