ProTx II is a synthetic, non-steroidal compound that has been shown to inhibit the Na+ channel and to have an inhibitory effect on amines. ProTx II is being investigated as a treatment for diabetic neuropathy and as a possible chemotherapeutic agent.
ProTx II also has biological properties, such as cell degranulation, spontaneous activity, and functional studies. It can be synthesized in two steps from commercially available reagents via solid-phase synthesis of 2-aminobenzothiazole. ProTx II has been shown to produce tail-flick analgesia in mice with sciatic nerve injury and has been shown to improve functional deficits in diabetic rats.
