9(E)-Hexadecenoic acid is a fatty acid that is found in the adipose tissue of mammals. It is also known as 9-HDA. 9-HDA has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects and may be useful for treating diseases of the bowel, such as Crohn's disease, by decreasing the production of inflammatory cytokines. 9-HDA can be identified in biopsies from fat tissue or blood samples from pregnant women. The biochemical composition of 9-HDA can be determined using gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis. 9-HDA is an important metabolite in energy metabolism and a signal peptide for protein synthesis. This fatty acid has also been shown to have inhibitory effects on cancer cells and to bind dna templates, thereby preventing transcription and replication.
