Erbium nitrate pentahydrate is an inorganic compound that belongs to the group of coordination complexes. It is a light-emitting chemical compound, which may be used as a coating for optical lenses or as an optical imaging agent. Erbium nitrate pentahydrate can be synthesized by reacting erbium chloride with nitric acid and hydrochloric acid. The synthesis process involves three steps: the initial production of erbium ions; the formation of an intermediate complex between erbium ions and nitric acid; and finally, the precipitation of erbium nitrate pentahydrate crystals from this solution. Erbium nitrate pentahydrate has been shown to emit light when excited by microwaves or visible light. This emission spectrum includes wavelengths ranging from about 600 nm to about 1100 nm.
