Lutetium(III) chloride is a halide that has been used as an extractant and in chemical synthesis. It is also used to prepare other lanthanides, such as europium(III) chloride. Lutetium(III) chloride can be obtained by evaporating the water from a solution of lutetium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid. The process of evaporation is aided by the fact that lutetium reacts with water to form hydroxyl ions, which are more soluble than the metal ion. This property has led to the use of lutetium(III) chloride in x-ray structures and flow systems for crystallization processes. Lutetium(III) chloride has also been shown to have anti-cancer properties when it binds to bone cancer cells and kills them by inhibiting their ability to produce light chains.
