Gadolinium chloride is a chemical element and a magnetic material. It has been shown to have significant up-regulation of the activity of several enzymes in both models and humans with bowel disease. This up-regulation may be due to oxidative injury to the cells, which in turn causes apoptosis. The mechanism by which gadolinium chloride induces apoptosis is unclear, but it has been shown that gadolinium binds to DNA and alters its structure. Gadolinium chloride also inhibits the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) by binding to dNTPs during DNA synthesis and preventing elongation of the newly synthesized strand of DNA.
