Pentabromopseudilin is a p-hydroxybenzoic acid derivative that possesses antimicrobial properties. The effects of pentabromopseudilin on the mitochondrial membrane potential and genotoxic effects have been investigated in vitro using a model system. Pentabromopseudilin has also been shown to possess anti-inflammatory activity. It has been used as an agent in bowel disease and may be useful for treating congestive heart failure. Pentabromopseudilin is synthesized by the reaction of pyrrole with 2,4,6-trichlorobenzoyl chloride, followed by cyclization to give the desired product. The synthesis is completed by reacting pentabromopseudilin with p-hydroxybenzoic acid in water and heating at 100°C for 12 hours to yield pentabromopseudilin hydrochloride.
