Dichloro-[2,2]-paracyclophane is a reagent for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of proteins in blood. It has the ability to bind to the protein-specific amino acid residues and form a complex that can be detected by spectrometric techniques. The binding reaction is based on the formation of a quaternary ammonium salt with chloride ions. Dichloro-[2,2]-paracyclophane forms a precipitate when mixed with an alkali solution, which can be seen as white or yellowish droplets on the surface of glassware. This precipitate is hemolytic, meaning it causes red blood cells to break apart. The technique is used primarily for identification of protein in blood samples.
