Glabrolide is a triterpenoid saponin with inhibitory properties that has been shown to be active against influenza virus. The mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it may involve the inhibition of viral uptake into cells or the prevention of glycoprotein synthesis. Glabrolide has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and can be used for the treatment of symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, gout, and bursitis. Glabrolide has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to fatty acids. It is not very soluble in water and is often mixed with excipients (e.g., sugar residues) which are then absorbed by the body when ingested orally. The chemical structure of glabrolide consists mainly of galacturonic acid and hydrogen bonds, which form an important part in its inhibitory properties.
