4-Methoxy-1H,1'H-2,2'-bipyrrole-5-carbaldehyde is an antibacterial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the cell wall. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of Streptomyces coelicolor and other bacteria in culture supernatant. The biosynthesis of this compound was elucidated by cloning and sequencing genes from the Streptomyces coelicolor genome. 4-Methoxy-1H,1'H-2,2'-bipyrrole-5-carbaldehyde is synthesized from two substrates; erythromycin and L -tryptophan. This synthesis was accomplished by a total synthesis using a modified version of the Claisen condensation reaction with aldehyde as one of the reactants.
