2-Butoxynaphthalene is a fluorescent naphthol that has a clathrate-type structure. This compound is soluble in acetonitrile and chloroform, but insoluble in water. The fluorescence of 2-butoxynaphthalene can be detected at approximately 350 nanometers. It can be synthesized by the reaction of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid with sodium nitrite, acetic acid, and hydrochloric acid under thermal conditions. 2-Butoxynaphthalene undergoes alkylation reactions and can be used as a synthetic precursor to other aromatic compounds.
