It binds to the sugar residues of the DNA duplex in a manner that alters its photophysical and biological properties. 5-Methyl-4-thioxo-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one has been shown to bind to dna binding proteins such as p53 and p300. This compound can also interact with oligodeoxynucleotides and is able to inhibit the synthesis of RNA by interacting with ribonucleotide reductase. The interaction of 5-methyl 4 thioxo 3,4 dihydropyrimidin 2(1H) one with ribonucleotide reductase leads to the formation of silver ions, which are toxic to cells and lead to cell death.
