The methoxy group on this amino acid allows it to be selective for dna sequences, which are unsymmetrical and contain methoxy residues. 3-Methoxythiophene-2-carboxylic acid has been shown to selectively bind dna sequences with a chloro substituent at the 3' position and to have affinities for residue thiophene.
