Zimelidine is a drug that belongs to the class of pharmacological agents. It is used as an antidepressant and has been shown to have inhibitory properties on the reuptake of serotonin, which may lead to an increase in the concentration of this neurotransmitter in the brain. Zimeldine also has effects on α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. The uptake of zimelidine into the body is slow and it can be detected in the blood for up to 3 days after administration. This drug has been shown to have cardiac effects and can cause bowel disease if taken over a long period of time. Zimeldine interacts with other drugs that are metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes, such as antidepressants and antipsychotics, leading to higher levels of these drugs remaining in the body than normal.
