Sambutoxin is a bioactive compound found in the fungus Talaromyces. It is an oxygenated hydrocarbon with a hydroxyl group at the alpha-position. The compound has been shown to induce apoptosis in mammalian cells and to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Sambutoxin inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential, which is associated with apoptosis. This compound also induces cell apoptosis by activating the caspase-dependent pathway and inhibiting DNA synthesis, leading to cell death. Sambutoxin may also have antitumor activity due to its inhibition of tumor cell proliferation and induction of tumor cell apoptosis.
