Product Information

Name:
Villosin
Synonyms:
  • 2(5H)-Furanone,3-[2-(decahydro-5,5,8a-trimethyl-2-methylene-1-naphthalenyl)ethenyl]-, [1S-[1a(E),4ab,8aa]]-
  • Villosin (Hedychium)
Description:

Villosin is a synthetic diterpene that has shown anticancer activity. It inhibits the production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and reactive oxygen species in lung fibroblasts, which may be due to its ability to inhibit specific phosphatases. Villosin also inhibits protein synthesis as well as DNA synthesis in murine melanoma cells. The mechanism of action for this compound is not fully understood but it may be due to a nucleophilic attack on the cancer cell's DNA. Villosin's precursor, deguelin, was found to have significant antitumor activity when studied in mouse models of human lung cancer and leukemia.
