Marfey's reagent is a mixture of l-tartaric acid, hydrochloric acid and trifluoroacetic acid. It is used to determine the presence of β-amino acids in urine samples by reacting with the amide group on the β-amino acid. The reaction produces a white precipitate that can be filtered and analyzed using a UV spectrophotometer or LC/MS/MS. Marfey's reagent has significant cytotoxicity and should not be used in cell culture experiments.
