The SMI1 protein is found in the cytosol and nucleus, where it regulates apoptosis and cell cycle progression. Knockout mice with a mutation in the SMI1 gene demonstrated increased autolysis, tumour growth, and tumour volume. These results suggest that SMI1 may be an effective target for therapeutic intervention.
