Methyl 2-cyano-3-fluorobenzoate is an intermediate in the synthesis of fluorinated benzoates. The compound is prepared from acid methyl ester and methyl 2-cyano-3-fluoroacetate by reacting them with arsenic trichloride. This compound reacts with sulfuric acid to produce a mixture of the desired product, methyl 2-(2,4,6-trifluorophenyl)benzoate, and other unidentified products. The reaction proceeds via the following equation:
