Vescalagin is extracted from the leaves and bark of a tree in the family Rutaceae, Castalaginus erythroxylon. It has been used as an antidiabetic agent for centuries. Vescalagin has also been shown to inhibit tumor growth by inducing autophagy and inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells. This compound has also been found to have antimicrobial properties against bacteria and fungi, which may be due to its ability to inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the peptidoglycan layer.
