- 3-(Hydroxymethyl)-6-nitrophenol
- 3-Hydroxy-4-nitrobenzyl alcohol
- 5-Hydroxymethyl-2-nitrophenol
5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-nitrophenol (5-HMNP) is a reactive intermediate in the catalytic mechanism of hydroxylation. 5-HMNP is produced by the reaction of an epoxide with a hydroxyl group. The isotope effect has been shown to be due to resonance stabilization, which stabilizes the molecule and prevents it from reacting further. 5-HMNP reacts with chloride ions to form phenols, which have been shown to have antioxidant properties.
