Description:

Naphthofluorescein is a fluorescent dye that can be used to measure the level of DNA damage in cells. It is also used for localizing and identifying specific DNA sequences. The fluorescence intensity of naphthofluorescein changes with the degree of DNA damage, making it an effective marker for measuring the extent of genetic mutations. Naphthofluorescein binds to the phosphate backbone of DNA and can be used to monitor enzyme activities or detect reactive oxygen species such as radiation or radicals. Naphthofluorescein has been shown to inhibit matrix metalloproteinase activity and has been studied as a potential treatment for cancer, particularly bone cancer. This drug may also be useful in preventing radiation-induced cancers.
