Sodium 4-acetylbenzenesulfonate is a natural product that is obtained by the oxidation of 4-acetylphenol. It can be used to catalyze the dehydrogenation of methyl ketones and pyridinium compounds. Sodium 4-acetylbenzenesulfonate also reacts with pyrylium salts to form hydrophobic reaction intermediates. The mechanism for this reaction is not well understood, but it is thought to involve an intermediate carbanion that reacts with the pyrylium salt in a nucleophilic substitution reaction. This process leads to the formation of two products, one of which is highly acidic.
