Product Information

Name:
3-Ethoxy-4-methoxyphenethylamine
Controlled Product
Synonyms:
  • 2-(3-Ethoxy-4-Methoxyphenyl)Ethanamine
Description:

3-Ethoxy-4-methoxyphenethylamine (EMPEA) is a lipid droplet that is used as a biological probe in the study of the structure and function of biological membranes. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeast, and some fungi. The lipid droplets are synthesized by a laborious process that involves two steps: first, an esterification reaction with chloroacetic acid and methanol; second, an amide formation with ethyl bromoacetate. This compound was discovered in 1955 when chemists were synthesizing drugs for treating tuberculosis. They found that it had no effect on tuberculosis but did have other biological properties. EMPEA has been shown to be stereoselective for the inhibition of lactamase activity, which is important in determining its therapeutic use.
