Fenamidone is a fungicide that inhibits the growth of plants by inhibiting mitochondrial cytochrome. Fenamidone has been shown to have synergistic effects when used in combination with prothioconazole, which is a chemical pesticide. The synergic effect was found to be more potent than the sum of the individual effects. Fenamidone also has been shown to inhibit the growth of wild-type strains and chemical pesticides, but not mutant strains. The mechanism of action for this inhibition is unknown, but it may involve a solanum tuberosum (potato) gene encoding a mitochondrial cytochrome P450 enzyme and/or an interaction between fenamidone and other chemicals present in fruits such as prothioconazole.
