It has been shown to have antagonist activity at the GABA receptor by competitive inhibition and it can be used as an analog for benzodiazepine drugs. 3-(Piperidin-4-yl)pyridine binds to the alpha subunit of the GABA receptor, which prevents chloride ions from entering the cell and hyperpolarizing the membrane. This leads to increased excitability of neurons, resulting in convulsions and seizures.
