BAW 2881 is a drug that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cancerous growths. It inhibits angiogenesis by interfering with the synthesis of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which is necessary for the formation of new blood vessels. BAW 2881 also inhibits proliferation, migration, and adhesion of tumor cells. The drug has been found to inhibit angiogenesis in mice with choroidal neovascularization induced by laser photocoagulation. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit tumor growth without toxicity in a number of animal models, including carcinogenesis induced by DMBA or TPA and epithelial cancers induced by methylcholanthrene or TPA. BAW 2881 also inhibits tumor cell proliferation and migration as well as angiogenesis in cell culture studies.
